Part of our Evaluation-Powerpoint

Evaluation

What kind of media institution might distribute your media project and why?

After researching Psycho (1960) and Fridaay the 13th (1980), which are both thriller movies that we have previously used for planning and research, we found that they had both been distributed by Paramount Pictures in some way. (Psycho from 1960-1968, and Friday the 13th in North America). As our film is also a thriller with similar aspects from these two movies, such as the narrative and lighting, we feel that 'The Unknown' could also possibly be distributed by Paramount Pictures in terms of genre and narrative. As well as distributing Psycho and Friday the 1th, Paramount Pictures also distributed Double Jeopardy (1999)- another psychological thriller. The fact that Paramount Pictures has distributed so many thrillers from so many different eras,(60's, 80's and late 90's) shows that they are used to doing so. We felt that as our film would probably be released as an art-house or independant movie, we should research whether Working Title movies could distribute it. We found that State of Play (2009) was a Working Title movie which is also a thriller, however it was distributed by Universal Pictures making it more Americanized and commercial (hence the American actors). Therefore Working Title nay not be the best to distribute our film. We have therefore concluded that distributing a British, independant thriller may be a new or rare concept.

Evaluation- Podcast

For our evaluation, we decided to do a podcast because we felt that this would be the most effective way to present our opinions about our film.

Our Final Piece!

This is our final piece! After alot of hard work and effort we finally finished our film. Eventhough, it isnt like the way we exactly imagines but it is alot nearer to our expectation. But we also believe that we could of done much more better than this.

Process of Evaluation

Today, again I (Gurleen) went in my free time to finish our evaluation. I converted our first film (which we re-filmed) into a quick time file so we can upload it to our blog and show how much of we changed as the people we showed didn't understand the narrative before as much as they do now. after a while Alia and Zaynah came and helped me out. Tonight Me and Alia will be making a power point for our evaluation to make it more visual and more interesting.

Our First Attempt.

This was our first film,we edited everything of this film and then showed it to our peers. After showing it to them, they gave us their feedback and most of them said that the narrative and lighting was the main points that didn't work out for them. So then we planned to changed our narrative and have better lighting at our location, so we decided to re-film our whole project. Looking at this piece and our final piece, you will see a huge difference as it makes much more sense and is clearer to watch.

This was our first film,we edited everything of this film and then showed it to our peers. Our final piece is a big improvement from this! After showing it to them, they gave us their feedback and most of them said that the flow of the lighting, as we could have made it look more intense. We researched into a few horror movies, and were inspired by their techniques such as their use of lighting and sound. We also changed our narrative, to create more narrative enigmas and make it more scary as we wanted to put the audience in a more vulnerable position by creating suspense.
We think we achieved this as a few of our scenes related to the horror films we had researched.
We tried to upload this film clip straight on to our blog, but due some technical problem we couldn't. So as a alternative, we uploaded the video on to YouTube and then added the link to our blog.

Making Changes and Evaluation

On the 23rd and 24th March, we started changing parts of our film which our classmates had suggested we improve on. We have almost finished doing this and are now working on our evaluation!

Wednesday 24 March 2010

Film Feedback

On Monday the 22nd Macrh, as a class we all watched each other's work and made some feedback for each group on a sheet. We all gave each other marks for Camera work, Editing, Mise-en-scene and etc. Also, we gave our opinions as a group on how their films worked was and what they can improve. After watching everyone's work, we got our Evaluation feedback sheets from the other groups in our class.

some of the reviews were:
1. How successful is sequence in engaging the audience?
"The music adds an eerie atmosphere and builds up tension"

2.Is the sequence recognisable as a film from a specific genre? what genre is it?
"Yes, Thriller"

3. Outline one outstanding feature and one that might be improved
"Maybe lighting-it was quite dark in some places"

4. Is there anything that can be improved through further post-production?
"Make it a little shorter, titles slower"

5.Please add any other comments you consider useful to the production groups evaluation.
"we thought it was good-perhaps a little dark"

Moreover, we were given marks by groups on our skills, one of the groups gave us these marks:
Camera work-53/60
Selecting mise-en-scene-44/60
Editing post-production, use of titles (including sound e.g. sound bridges, titles)-54/60
Use of diegetic and non-diegetic sound (use it appropriate, does it add meaning?)-53/60
Producing a sequence which is reliable as the opening from a thriller-54/60

We were pleased to get these reviews back as we got some good criticisms and some constructive criticisms. With this we can change parts of our movie to make it better and also take note of the things we did well to include in our evaluation.

Re-filmed Editing

Today Me, Zaynah and Alia spent over 4 hours finishing our film and editing it. We added music on to it and the title and the credits. Gemma couldn't be there due to other work reasons. One of the main skills we all learnt today was that how to add sound/music/audio from the Garage Band to iMovies. We also learnt that through Garage Band we can produce our own music or get sound effects from there and save it as a iTune file so then we can add it to our film.

Re-filmed Editing

Today, I (Gurleen) went in my free time to edit our re-filmed footage. Also, today I finished all of the editing but i will have to show it to my group so we can re-edit any parts which are not suitable for our film. Moreover, Alia and Zaynah went after school in their free time to add background music to our film.
Hopefully tommorrow we will finish adding the background music and our title for the movie.

Wednesday 17 March 2010

Re-filming Editing

From 16th March we loaded all the footage on to the Mac and started to edit again.
The scenes we uploaded were better in sense of lighting and the camera angles.

Friday 12 March 2010

Re-filmed Editing

Today we imported all of the footage that we have done so far on the Mac.
The Mac we used to import our footage, is not working at the moment as we have come in our free time to edit, we will have to delay our editing for now until monday.

Wednesday 10 March 2010

Re-Filming Process

Today we all went back to our loaction and re-filmed our project, mainly for the reason of lighting and our narrative.
We were going to shoot our filming with a HD camera but due to the fact that the charger of the camera was unavailable we had to use normal camera.
So far we have filmed most of our footage and still have to about 5-4 shots to do, which will be done by monday.
Me (Gurleen), Alia and Zaynah changed the narrative and planned out all of our shots all over again. Gemma will be drawing our final story board and we all will be finalising our background music.

Inspirational Videos :)

After finding that our edited footage wasn't scary enough for the usual genre conventions of horror movies; we looked at some classic horror movies to get some ideas to improve our work. We noticed good lighting techniques from this scene from Friday 13th.

After watching Psycho, we got an idea of the type of music we needed to include in our video.

Monday 8 March 2010

Re-Filming

On 8th March, we went back to our location with the intention to completely re-film out whole film. We had planned our new narrative out and knew how to improve it from the last time. We used different lighting, making it look more scary, and we were filiming with the exact type of music we wanted in mind.
By the end of the day we had filmed most of it, but there are still some scenes we need to finish.

Sunday 7 March 2010

Editing

We started to edit our project since February 23rd, and while editing we learnt new skills such as extracting audio and placing it under different clips.
We also learnt that we have to duplicate many of our clips because just in case we may need them later on to add more to our whole project.
We downloaded background music from www.freeplaymusic.com where you can download royalty free music. we downloaded quite a few of the horror based sound clips which we then edited on to our film.
After editing with the background music all we had to do was add our title to the film but before that, we thought we should show it to people in our class and teacher and get some feedback on our film. From the feedback we got, we decided that our narrative did not follow through and our narrative enigma didn't make sense.
Also we looked at some classic horror movies such as Psycho, Friday 13th and Scream which gave us much more clearer ideas on how to make our film more scary and believable.

Tuesday 23 February 2010

Uploading and Editing

As we'd finished all of our filming, we decided to upload our filming straight away and edit it. Uploading only took about 20 minutes, and so we could look at what we had filmed and select the appropriate ones needed for the film. We tried to pick clips that would best fit the genre conventions of a horror movie.

Monday 22 February 2010

Filming Process

Today we all met up at our location which we were going to film on, and re-filmed our whole project as the last one wasn't as good and it didn't look beliveable. Also, the mise-en-scene wasn't good because we couldn't get the camera angles right.
Today we learnt alot of things such as: which light effects would set our mise-en-scene and look effective for our opening sequence.
It took us about 2-3 hours today to finish our filming.
Me (Gurleen) and Alia were mainly using the camera and Zaynah and Gemma assisted us in direction and helped us on how to do it better and gave us ideas on how we can film it.

Thursday 18 February 2010

Filming Process

Today, we all met at Gemma's house to film our film. We met at 12.00pm and practiced camera skills aswell as how to stay steady, as our story line contains going up the stairs and moving around the house. Me (Gurleen), Zaynah and Alia filmed, and used the camera, where as Gemma helped us assist on direction and set the Mise-en-scene.

Have You Fed The Fish?

This is our preliminary task which has been uploaded onto Youtube on the Coombe Media Channel.

Preliminary Evaluation

We completed our our task within about a week and a half.
We thoroughly enjoyed filming and editing as it was a new experience for two of us.

Friday 5 February 2010

Preliminary Task

on friday the 5th of February, we uploaded our storyboard. we took shots from our real video clip to produce our storyboard. to create our storyboard and get the shots, we used the iMovie and use the Grab tool to select the stills/shots that we wanted for our storyboard.
To upload our storyboard on our blog, we had to download it first on the issu website to get the embedded code. after we got the embedded code, we pasted it to the blog.

Prelimanary Task- Editing

On Wednesday 3rd Feb we spent our whole lesson editing and at the same time learning new skills for editing in iMovies.
We learnt how to upload our filming from the camera, how to do simple cuts and how to use the transitions to go from one shot to another and use the 'Fade' effect to fasten the pace of the footage. we also, learnt to 'split at playhead' which was an a quick and easier alternative for cutting our clips down.
moreover, we learnt how to remove the sound off a specific clip and move it to another or remove it completely.

Wednesday 3 February 2010

Preliminary Task

On Wednesday the 27th, we filmed our first shots for the preliminary task.
We began by casting our friends in the production, and started filming.
We started with the establishing shot, and during the hour we managed to get the first 4 scenes done. As we didn't manage to film the shots with the characters and dialogue in, it wasn't possible to use the same people that we had cast as they weren't free when we had to film.
We carried on filming on Friday 29th, and had casted other people to finish off the task.
our group didn't finish filming in this time and we had to continue the production on Monday 1st Feb to get the filming finished. However, this caused a few issues as our cast had to wear the same clothing on the Monday so that we could finish. Additionally, when we got to the location to film, the room we had been using was taken and therefore we re-filmed most of the shots in a different room so we could complete the project.
On Tuesday 2nd Feb we started to edit our shots together in the double lesson we had. This was a difficult task as most of us didn't remember how to edit, but we quickly overcome this, and when we got going it became easier.

Tuesday 26 January 2010

Preliminary Project

We finished off our storyboard, then went and took still pictures of each of the storyboard shots to give a different perspective to the storyboard. We will post these pictures up soon!

Preliminary Project

Our teacher gave us the brief for our preliminary topic.
We were given a  sheet, and we had to complete a story board to plan out what we are going to film for the task.

Monday 25 January 2010

The Strangers

For our main project we researched on a similar movie genre, which was horror, and made a powerpoint presentation describing the different techniques used in the opening scene. We chose this movie specifically after looking at various horror movies as this film stood out to us, due to its camera shots and angles.
